Vladimir Voronin steps down as PCRM president after over 30 years

Former President Vladimir Voronin, who led the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM) for more than 30 years, has resigned as party president. This decision was announced on June 6 at the party's Congress, which was attended by 254 delegates, according to the party's official website.

During the meeting, Diana Caraman was elected as the new deputy leader of the PCRM, while Vladimir Voronin was designated as the honorary president, a position created for the first time at this congress.

Constantin Starîș and Vladimir Telnov were elected as secretaries of the PCRM Central Committee.

According to a statement from the party, the election of the new president represents a logical renewal of leadership while maintaining the programmatic objectives and political traditions on which the PCRM was founded, has developed, and continues to uphold.

Vladimir Voronin led the Communist Party since 1994. After the PCRM's victory in the 2001 parliamentary elections, he was elected president of the country, a position he held until 2009. In September of that same year, Voronin stepped down as head of state.
