IMF may help Moldova address climate change challenges
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is discussing with the authorities in Chisinau the launch of a new special financing package for the Republic of Moldova to address climate change issues. The statement was made by Alfred Kammer, Director of the European Department of the IMF, at the end of his first visit to Moldova.
"Climate change is a big problem globally and also a very big problem for the Republic of Moldova, just because of the effects that climate change could have on the economy, in particular, on agriculture. Therefore, we are starting discussions on this new instrument that would support Moldova financially, but also through a policy framework to help adapt to climate change, but also in terms of making sure that green investments are made in an appropriate framework. Much of this investment in the green transition and in tackling climate change will have to come from the private sector," said the Director of the IMF's European Department.
Alfred Kammer added that the commitments made were very important for economic development and crisis management in Moldova.
A delegation of the International Monetary Fund, led by Alfred Kammer, Director of the Fund's European Department, is paying an official visit to Chisinau on 8-10 March.
