Moldova corporate gas market shift yields strong results

The liberalization of Moldova’s natural gas market for large corporate consumers has delivered its first major outcomes. During the first two months of the reform, companies traded over 514,000 MWh (approx. 48 million cubic meters) on the over-the-counter (OTC) platform operated by the Romanian Commodities Exchange (BRM).

A total of 43 companies, including major private enterprises and high-consumption state-owned firms, participated in these market transactions. The resulting supply contracts span durations from one month to a full year.
Structural shifts in energy procurement
Effective April 1, 2026, large non-household consumers transitioned away from regulated public service tariffs. These entities now independently select their suppliers and negotiate commercial terms directly on the open market.
The regulatory framework mandates that all large non-household consumers—defined as companies with an annual consumption exceeding 100,000 cubic meters—must secure their gas supply exclusively from the competitive market.
Strengthening regional energy resilience
Failure to secure a valid commercial contract results in the immediate cessation of gas deliveries. This strict enforcement mechanism aims to accelerate full market integration.
The reform enhances Moldova's energy security by diversifying supply routes and sourcing gas from multiple international directions. This structural transition ultimately stabilizes the energy sector and fosters long-term economic resilience.
