Moldova parliament urges proactive flood defense ahead of heavy rains

The State Hydrometeorological Service has issued orange and yellow weather alerts for atmospheric instability across Moldova. The warnings remain active from Thursday afternoon through Friday evening, signaling widespread torrential rains and severe electrical storms.

Meteorologists forecast cumulative rainfall reaching up to 50–79 liters per square meter in orange alert zones. Yellow alert regions expect accumulations between 15–49 liters per square meter, with localized hail and wind gusts accelerating up to 15–20 meters per second.

Public safety officials urge citizens to exercise extreme caution, avoid non-essential travel during storms, and secure loose outdoor structures. Drivers are advised to adjust vehicle speeds significantly to counter hazardous road conditions.

Parliament demands immediate preventative action

In response to the severe forecast, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu directed local public authorities to implement urgent flood mitigation measures. The legislative chief called on mayors and regional presidents to mobilize all local resources to clear drainage systems and reinforce hydrological infrastructure.

Grosu emphasized that local administrations must deploy available heavy machinery and collaborate with domestic business operators immediately. He noted that proactive maintenance prevents significantly higher disaster recovery costs in the aftermath of such storms.

The Speaker stated that recurrent flood damage often stems from inadequate preventative upkeep by local administrations. He stressed that Municipalities hold direct jurisdiction over their local waterways and should not rely solely on central ministries for routine clearing operations.

In parallel, central government authorities are currently conducting impact assessments to quantify damages caused by recent rainfall.
