Maia Sandu and António Costa discussed opening EU negotiation chapters

On Friday, June 12, the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, spoke on the phone with António Costa, the President of the European Council. During their conversation, they discussed the progress of Moldova's accession process to the European Union, as well as preparations for the upcoming EU-Moldova Summit, scheduled for June 22. They also focused on the imminent opening of the first group of negotiation chapters, with the authorities in Chisinau emphasizing their commitment to accelerating the European integration process.

According to a statement from the Presidency, Maia Sandu and António Costa discussed recent developments regarding the Republic of Moldova's European path, including preparations for the upcoming EU-Moldova bilateral meeting this month.

The two leaders welcomed the decision to open the first group of negotiation chapters soon, as stated in the announcement.

During their discussion, the head of state reaffirmed Chișinău's commitment to continuing the necessary reforms for closer ties with the European Union and the opening of all negotiation chapters.

"The Republic of Moldova is prepared to open all groups of chapters and to pursue the necessary reforms to become an EU member state through a merit-based accession process," reiterated Maia Sandu.

Additionally, the officials reviewed the priorities on the agenda for the EU-Moldova Summit scheduled for June 22. This summit follows a regular format agreed upon by both parties, which demonstrates their strong commitment to the European integration of the Republic of Moldova.
