Moldova accelerates EU integration path in Luxembourg talks

Moldova officially begins accession negotiations with the European Union today, June 15, in Luxembourg. The intergovernmental conference marks the opening of Cluster 1, "Fundamentals," the cornerstone of the country's integration process.

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu leads the Moldovan delegation, while Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov presents the national negotiation position. The event underscores Chișinău's commitment to judicial reform, the rule of law, and alignment with European standards.

Negotiations proceed concurrently with Ukraine, reflecting the merit-based approach of the current EU enlargement policy. This meeting represents a follow-up to the official launch of accession talks initiated in June 2024.

Following the conference, Prime Minister Munteanu will hold a joint press briefing with representatives of the EU Council Presidency and the European Commission. The progress made in this session will be highlighted at the upcoming EU summit in Brussels on June 18–19.

President Maia Sandu recently reaffirmed Moldova’s dedication to these reforms during a discussion with European Council President António Costa. Preparations are also underway for the upcoming EU–Moldova Summit on June 22.
