EU confirms Moldova–EU Summit on June 22 in Brussels

On June 22, President Maia Sandu of the Republic of Moldova will participate in the second Moldova-European Union Summit in Brussels. This historic event will also feature the President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who will represent the EU.
The details were confirmed by both the Moldovan Presidency and the European Council. This meeting follows the official opening of Moldova’s accession negotiations on the first group of chapters, titled "Fundamental Values," which occurred on June 15.
During the summit, leaders will evaluate Moldova's progress on key reforms, including the rule of law, fundamental rights, and the fight against organized crime. The European Council expressed its readiness to expedite the accession process. António Costa described this moment as "historic" for both the EU and Moldova, highlighting that enlargement is a geopolitical and strategic choice for "a stronger and more secure Europe."
Costa emphasized, "We are firmly committed to supporting Moldova’s path towards the EU. Our partnership is closer than ever as we work together to strengthen our resilience, stability, and shared European values."
Leaders will also reaffirm their commitment to Moldova's sovereignty, security, and resilience, particularly in light of Russia's ongoing hybrid attacks and war against Ukraine. Discussions will also focus on Moldova's advancements in energy security, diversification, and efficiency, as well as its gradual integration into the EU internal market in key sectors.
The Council has noted the economic dimension of their relationship, stating that the EU is Moldova's largest trading partner. In 2025, trade with the EU accounted for over half of Moldova's total trade in goods, generating a turnover exceeding €7 billion.
The Republic of Moldova submitted its application for EU membership in March 2022, received candidate country status in June 2022, and officially opened accession negotiations in June 2024. Two years later, on June 15, 2026, the first group of chapters, "Fundamental Values," was effectively opened during the second Intergovernmental Conference in Luxembourg.
