About 5 million lei allocated in 2026 for political repression victims’ compensation

On June 17, the government approved the allocation of approximately two million lei to compensate individuals who experienced political repression and have since been rehabilitated. This compensation is specifically for those whose property, confiscated by the Soviet regime, cannot be returned. A total of six people from various districts across the country will benefit from this compensation.

Finance Minister Andrian Gavriliță stated, "A total of 1 million 800 thousand lei will be allocated to the municipal councils of Bălți and Chișinău, as well as the district councils of Călărași, Dondușeni, Dubăsari, and Râșcani, to provide compensation to six individuals."

According to the legislation, citizens of the Republic of Moldova who have experienced political repression and have been subsequently rehabilitated, along with their heirs, are entitled to request the return of property that was confiscated, nationalized, or otherwise taken from them. In cases where the property cannot be returned, the state offers financial compensation from the state budget.

The document approved by the Government refers to Article 12 of the Law on the Rehabilitation of Victims of Political Repression, which outlines the mechanism for providing this compensation. The value of irrecoverable property will be compensated through transfers from the state budget to the budgets of second-level administrative-territorial units, based on applications submitted by the rehabilitated individuals or their heirs.

The law specifies that if the value of the property does not exceed 200,000 lei, compensation can be paid in installments over a period of up to three years, with annual installments of 33.3%. If the value of the assets exceeds this threshold, payment can be distributed over up to five years, with annual installments of 20%.

Additionally, individuals who have been subjected to political repression and have reached the age of 75, after rehabilitation, are eligible for a one-time payment of compensation.

For 2026, the state budget has allocated 4.9 million lei to compensate victims of political repression.
