Moldovan citizens spent an average of €255 (approx. 4,995 MDL) per month in 2025, according to latest national data. While food products claimed the largest share of overall family budgets at 43%, healthcare represented the lowest expenditure category at just 4.6%.

The weight of rural subsistence

Demographic location drastically shifts how households allocate their income across the country. Rural families spent over half of their available budgets—51.1%—strictly on food and non-alcoholic beverages. In contrast, urban residents dedicated just over a third of their finances, or 37.8%, to these basic necessities.

Rural areas also demonstrated higher budget shares for clothing and footwear at 7.1%, compared to 6.8% in cities. Furthermore, utility bills and domestic energy sources squeezed village budgets harder, accounting for 17.2% of expenditures versus 15.5% in urban centers. Home maintenance and furniture procurement followed a similar pattern, requiring 6.3% of rural income against 5.6% in urban environments.

Urban mobility and lifestyle dynamics

City dwellers directed significantly larger financial resources toward modern infrastructure and lifestyle services. Urban public transport, tickets, and taxi services consumed 10.2% of city budgets, effectively doubling the 5.3% allocation registered in rural sectors.

Healthcare also required a larger share of urban wallets, standing at 5.2% compared to 3.7% in villages. Driven by disposable income variance, urban spending on recreation, sports, and cultural activities reached 19%, nearly twice the 10.2% rate found in rural communities.

Year-on-year structural shifts

The macroeconomic landscape of 2025 shifted slightly compared to 2024, with overall food and beverage expenditures rising by one percentage point. Transport costs followed an upward trajectory across all demographics.

Conversely, household utility and energy expenses saw relief, dropping from 17.2% in 2024 to 16.2% in 2025. By the end of the year, total individual monthly spending averaged 6,328 MDL in urban zones and 3,827 MDL in rural communities.
