Russian FSB agent disguised as tourist arrested in Moldova for espionage

Moldovan authorities have detained a Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) officer at the state border during a joint operation by the Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) and special prosecutors.
Following a request from the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS), a court placed the suspect under a 30-day preventive detention order.
The espionage coverage
The Russian citizen attempted to enter the Republic of Moldova by claiming a tourist itinerary to visit several local monasteries.
However, security agency intelligence revealed that his actual destination was the breakaway Transnistria region.
The suspect targeted the demilitarized Security Zone to gather unauthorized data and intelligence.
According to official statements, the operation sought to compromise Moldova’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national security defense capabilities.
Prior subversive operations
Intelligence records indicate this was not the operative's first deployment to the country.
The FSB officer previously operated inside Moldova between September 2017 and September 2019.
During that period, he allegedly directed subversion campaigns targeting the nation's state security.
To bypass local surveillance during his initial deployment, the operative utilized a diplomatic passport issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
He conducted these operations clandestinely, without seeking or obtaining official accreditation from the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
