Moldovan Foreign Ministry condemns killing of Ukrainian soldier native of Moldova
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration strongly condemns the killing of the Moldovan citizen, which can be qualified as a war crime and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, following the confirmation by the Ukrainian side that the Ukrainian soldier executed by the Russian soldiers is Alexandr Mațievskii.

We express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Alexandr Mayyevskii and express our solidarity with the Ukrainian people. We reiterate the firm position of the Republic of Moldova condemning the brutal war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Our country remains committed to supporting Ukraine in its efforts to return the region to peace and stability"*, reads an MFAEI statement.
On Sunday, 12 March, Ukraine's security service announced that it had definitively identified a soldier in a video recording of him being shot after uttering the words "Glory to Ukraine". He was a territorial defense sniper Alexander Mațievskii. Also on Sunday, President Zelenski posthumously awarded him the title of Hero of Ukraine.
Earlier, the Regional Directorate of Territorial Defense "North" of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced that the man shot was Alexandr Mațievskii, who was born on May 10, 1980 in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova. In 2008, he moved with his family to Ukraine, to the town of Nejin, where he lived with his mother, Paraskovia Mihailovna.
According to the quoted source, on December 30, 2022, Mațievskii and four other fighters took part in fighting near Soledar. Visual contact and communication with them was lost around 12:00.
The bodies of the Ukrainians who died in the battle near Soledar were returned to Ukraine in an exchange with Russia. Alexandr Mațievskii passed away on 14 February 2023.
The video of Mațievsckii's execution was widely circulated on social media on 6 March.
