Luceafărul theatre actors bring the performance "1946" to PMAN in memory of the victims of the famine

The exhibition dedicated to the victims of the deportations, set up in the Great National Assembly Square (PMAN) in Chișinău, will become the stage this evening, June 26, for the performance "1946", which actors from the Republican "Luceafărul" Theatre will present starting at 8:00 p.m.

The event is part of the exhibition's special programme and honours the memory of the victims of the man-made famine of 1946 to 1947, one of the most tragic chapters in our recent history.

Directed by Slava Șambriș, the performance draws on testimonies collected in the book "The Book of the Famine" and brings back into focus the suffering caused by the Soviet regime, as well as the profound impact this tragedy had on families and communities across Bassarabia.

The public is invited to take part in this moment of reflection and remembrance and to bring a candle in memory of the victims of the man made famine and all those who suffered under Soviet repression.

This year, the Republic of Moldova marks two tragic milestones in its recent history: 80 years since the man made famine of 1946 to 1947 and 85 years since the Soviet deportations of 1941.

The exhibition "State Terror in Soviet Moldova: Scale, Victims, and Perpetrators", displayed in the Great National Assembly Square (PMAN), has reached its fourth edition. It opened on June 12 to mark the 85th anniversary of the deportations carried out on the night of June 12 to 13, 1941, and remains open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. through July 6. That date marks the 77th anniversary of the deportations carried out on the night of July 5 to 6, 1949, known as Operation "YUG," the largest wave of Stalinist deportations from Bassarabia.

At that time, the Soviet authorities deported more than 35,000 farmers and intellectuals to Siberia.

Archival records and historians' findings show that the starvation of the population during the Soviet period was a deliberate policy that caused the deaths of approximately 200,000 people and profoundly reshaped the social fabric and identity of society. This year marks 80 years since the Soviet authorities launched the man-made famine in the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic.
