New wastewater network secures clean water for 7,000 Moldovans

The Moldovan government and the North Regional Development Agency (North RDA) have completed a major €1.16 million (approx. 22.8 million MDL) sanitation infrastructure project in the northern Sangerei region.

The initiative has successfully expanded the local main sewage pipeline by approximately six kilometers. The new network connects a recently completed wastewater treatment plant with a newly constructed pumping station.

Regional demographic impact

The upgraded system provides immediate access to modern sanitation services for roughly 7,000 local residents. This total includes 4,500 citizens across 980 households in the town of Sangerei.

Additionally, the project integrates 2,500 residents from the neighboring village of Bilicenii Vechi, connecting nearly 130 rural households to the modern grid.

Environmental preservation goals

According to North RDA officials, the new infrastructure will prevent at least 250,000 cubic meters of untreated wastewater from being discharged into the environment annually.

This ecological shift significantly mitigates pollution in the Ciuluc River basin. The seasonal river traverses the Sangerei district before flowing into the larger Raut River, a vital water resource for the country.

Funding and future expansion

The total investment of EUR 1.16 million was heavily backed by central state resources. The National Fund for Regional and Local Development provided EUR 1.05 million (20.5 million MDL), while the Sangerei Mayor's Office co-financed the remaining EUR 117,000 (2.3 million MDL).

The newly built utility foundation creates technical premises to expand sewage services to neighboring communes. Future development phases aim to connect the Grigorauca and Copaceni municipalities, potentially reaching an additional 6,000 residents.
