The Republic of Moldova currently produces between 550 and 600 types of medicines, which accounts for approximately 10% of the products listed in the State Nomenclature, totaling over 6,000 authorized items.
In 2025, the pharmaceutical market in Moldova was predominantly supplied by imported medicines, with 93% of products coming from abroad, according to data from the Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices.
Last year, the pharmaceutical market in Moldova generated nearly 866.7 million euros. Imported medicines made up 92.89% of the market's value and 86.22% of the total volume traded. In contrast, local manufacturers accounted for about 13.8% of volume but only 7.1% of market value, suggesting that domestic medicines are generally cheaper.
Among the best-selling imported medicines, based on their international non-proprietary names, are Dapagliflozin (used for type 2 diabetes and heart failure), Ibuprofen (used for pain relief and fever reduction), and Rivaroxaban (used in the prevention and treatment of blood clots, including post-surgery).
For domestically produced medicines, the leading products were Rivaroxaban, followed by Famotidine (used for gastric and duodenal ulcers, reflux esophagitis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome) and Bicalutamide (an antiandrogen used to treat advanced prostate cancer).
