MEP: EU accession is the surest way to guarantee Moldova's stability and security
MEP Siegfried Mureșan says that joining the European Union is the surest way to guarantee Moldova's long-term stability and security.
According to the MEP, the best way for the EU to help our country is to start accession negotiations as soon as possible, before the end of this year.
"In parallel with the start of accession negotiations, we need to take as many measures as possible to integrate Moldova into Europe, such as joining the single market and reducing roaming charges. The sooner people in Moldova feel the benefits of European integration, before the actual accession to the EU, the harder it will be for Russia to manipulate, misinform and destabilise", says Siegfried Muresan.
The MEP also stressed the importance of financial support so that Moldova can stabilise its economy and take measures to help its people. The new macro-financial assistance of €145 million should be adopted as soon as possible in the European Parliament.
"Equally important is to continue to help the Republic of Moldova reduce its dependence on gas from the Russian Federation. The less energy-dependent Moldova is on the Kremlin, the less Russia has the tools to blackmail it. In parallel, we can also help by sanctioning, at European Union level, oligarchs in Moldova who are working to destabilise the country, just as we have sanctioned oligarchs in the Russian Federation responsible for the war in Ukraine. Last but not least, we must continue to help the authorities in Chisinau to secure their garrisons and to fight disinformation coming from the Russian Federation", Siegfried Muresan wrote on his Facebook page.
