Moldova opposition boycotts government consultations amid political feud

The opposition National Alternative Movement (MAN) has officially announced it will boycott the upcoming institutional consultations initiated by President Maia Sandu to designate a new prime minister. The political formation finalized the decision during an expanded session of its National Council.

MAN leader and Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban characterized the scheduled political discussions as a farce. Ceban demanded the immediate dissolution of parliament and called for snap legislative and presidential elections.

"MAN lawmakers have no reason to participate in these discussions," Ceban stated. He further criticized the legislative leadership, accusing the ruling party of monopolizing democratic procedures rather than observing standard European governance frameworks.

The presidency countered via an official statement, reminding all political factions that organizing consultations following a governmental collapse remains a strict constitutional mandate. The head of state emphasized that refusing to participate exclusively harms the voters represented by the boycotting parties.

The political gridlock follows the sudden resignation of Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu on July 3. Munteanu announced his departure on social media after an eight-month tenure, stating he could no longer exercise his duties in accordance with his core principles.

President Sandu subsequently dismissed public speculation that the former premier faced administrative obstructions while attempting to combat systemic corruption. Sandu asserted that Munteanu maintained full executive autonomy and chose to step down voluntarily.

However, the president disclosed that internal personal friction and operational disagreements occurred between Munteanu and Education and Research Minister Dan Perciun.

President Sandu will commence official dialogue with the remaining parliamentary factions next week before designating a new prime ministerial candidate. Alexandru Munteanu will continue to serve as caretaker premier until a new cabinet secures a legislative majority.
