Moldova simplifies school enrollment for Ukrainian refugees

Refugee children from Ukraine will have a guaranteed 10% quota of available spots for admission to grades 1 and 10 in the Republic of Moldova for the 2026-2027 school year. This announcement was made by representatives of the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC) during an information session for parents on July 8.
The process for enrolling Ukrainian children in schools in the Republic of Moldova has been significantly simplified, according to the authorities.
One of the key measures implemented is the expansion of Ukrainian-language classes at the "Taras Şevcenko" Gymnasium in Chisinau. Students at this institution will also be required to learn Romanian.
Additionally, at parents' request, educational institutions that do not currently offer Ukrainian-language classes can establish after-school programs to help children study the language. This initiative aims to support the preservation of their mother tongue and cultural identity.
To further facilitate the integration of these children into the educational system, as well as the labor market and society in the Republic of Moldova, Romanian language courses are being organized for both children and adults.
Refugee children also have access to textbooks and teaching materials, psycho-pedagogical support services, and assistance through collaborations between local public authorities and international partners.

According to MEC data, there are 2,879 children and young refugees from Ukraine enrolled in general education institutions in the Republic of Moldova.
Additionally, 857 children are attending early childhood education institutions.
Meanwhile, some refugee children continue their studies online, following the Ukrainian curriculum and staying connected with the education system in their home country.
