Moldova advances EU accession talks on foreign relations

The Republic of Moldova takes a significant step toward European integration this week. An intergovernmental conference in Brussels on July 14 marks the official opening of negotiations for Cluster 6, "External Relations."

A government delegation, led by the acting Prime Minister Eugeniu Osmochescu, is representing Moldova at the high-level event. The team includes Deputy Prime Ministers Cristina Gherasimov and Mihai Popșoi.

The delegation is engaged in a series of strategic consultations with key European officials. Topics of discussion include regional security, economic cooperation, and the alignment of foreign policy with the European Union.

Key meetings are scheduled with European Commissioners Maroš Šefčovič and Valdis Dombrovskis, as well as with the European Commission’s Director-General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations, Gert Jan Koopman. Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi will also consult with High Representative Kaja Kallas and senior officials from the European External Action Service.

Following the opening of the cluster, the diplomatic agenda continues through July 16. Discussions will focus on building a more resilient Europe, with participation from European Parliamentary committees and the European Economic and Social Committee.

Moldova officially began its cluster-based accession negotiations on June 15, 2026. This process encompasses 33 chapters organized into six clusters, aiming to align the country’s legislative and institutional framework with EU standards.
