The European Commission announces the steps of a scheme for European Union countries that will purchase natural gas on world markets

The European Commission will announce today what are its next steps in launching a scheme for European Union countries that will jointly purchase natural gas from world markets, announced the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, Agerpres reports.

The Community Executive is also preparing a proposal to extend, beyond the coming winter, a voluntary target for EU countries to reduce their gas consumption by 15% during the winter months. The European Union introduced this target last year in an attempt to avoid a crisis in energy supplies and to calm rising gas prices.

We remind you that last week, the vice-president of the European Commission, Maros Sefcovic, said that the EU bloc intends to take the first steps in the global natural gas market in the form of a group of buyers in April, in an attempt to lower energy prices. After the tender is launched in April, the EU expects the first contracts with suppliers in the US, the Middle East and Africa to be signed in early June.
