Vasile Tofan takes office as Moldova PM to push EU reforms
Moldova's parliament backed Prime Minister-designate Vasile Tofan and his Cabinet on July 21, securing a vote of confidence following a nine-hour legislative debate. Tofan pledged to maintain reform momentum and accelerate the nation's European integration path.
A swift transition focused on national duty
President Maia Sandu initiated contact with Tofan shortly after the resignation of former Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu. Tofan stated he accepted the leadership role immediately to serve national interests over personal comfort.
Addressing public speculation, Tofan confirmed that no political preconditions were attached to his appointment. He emphasized strong alignment with the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) on key strategic goals, including anti-corruption measures and judiciary reform.
Reformist mandate over political careerism
Tofan stressed that his administration will prioritize structural economic and institutional reforms over political popularity. He pledged to adjust his ministerial team if governance benchmarks are not met.
Highlighting the strategic demands facing Moldova, Tofan described his role as a determined reformist willing to address systemic vulnerabilities directly rather than focusing on personal political longevity.
Parliamentary backing and official swearing-in
The new government secured confirmation with 53 votes from the ruling PAS party. Opposing votes were cast by 14 Socialist and 7 Communist lawmakers, while 21 MPs abstained from the vote.
Prime Minister Tofan and his Cabinet will take the oath of office at the Presidential Palace on July 22 at 8:00 AM, followed by their inaugural Cabinet meeting at 1:00 PM.
