Nine criminal cases filed for domestic violence in 2025
In 2025, the Republic of Moldova reported 71 cases of domestic violence, which resulted in 21 fatalities. The aggressors in these cases included both men and women. Additionally, nine criminal cases were initiated based on 68 instances of violence that led to serious and particularly severe consequences.
The data is presented in the report from the Commission for the Analysis of Femicide and Domestic Violence, which was prepared by a specialized group within the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The figures indicate that among the 68 cases analyzed, 45 women were victims. Out of these, 14 women died, and there were six recorded attempts of murder. Additionally, 26 men were involved, with seven fatalities and three attempted murders documented. In total, 53 men and 15 women participated as aggressors in these cases.
Statistics indicate that female victims dominate in serious forms of violence, with male victims comprising 65% and female victims accounting for 35% of the total cases analysed. This trend is also evident among deceased victims.
During the reference period, there were 42 cases of violence involving female victims and male aggressors, 14 cases where men were both victims and aggressors, 12 cases in which the victims were men and the aggressors were women, and three cases in which both the victim and the aggressor were women.
Out of a total of 21 cases resulting in the death of the victim, 13 involved female victims and male aggressors, which is defined as femicide. Consequently, femicide cases account for 93% of the total number of deceased female victims.
In 2025, the number of femicide cases is decreasing compared to the 21 cases reported in 2023–2024 and the 24 cases in 2022. However, 2025 is notable for a significant increase in the proportion of female victims, who make up almost two-thirds of the total victims analyzed.

Additionally, the Commission for the Analysis of Cases of Femicide and Domestic Violence, which result in the victim's death or serious injury, was established in 2022. This independent inter-institutional mechanism analyzes severe cases of domestic violence, identifying risk factors and formulating recommendations to improve prevention and response measures.
