Joint border initiative supports Moldova and Ukraine's EU ambitions
The General Inspectorate of the Border Police hosted the inaugural meeting of the heads of border authorities from the Republic of Moldova, Latvia, Lithuania, and Ukraine from July 21 to 23. During this meeting, a joint declaration was signed to cooperate and support the integration process of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine into the European Union.
The document enhances collaboration in the area of integrated border management and facilitates the sharing of expertise and best practices from the Baltic states.
A key moment of the meeting was the signing of the Joint Declaration on Cooperation and Support for the Integration of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine into the European Union by the leaders of the four border authorities, as reported by the Border Police.
According to the institution, this document reaffirms Latvia and Lithuania's support for the European objectives of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. They will provide assistance by sharing experience, institutional expertise, and best practices gained during their own accession to the European Union. Additionally, the declaration establishes a mechanism to strengthen cooperation in integrated border management, aimed at enhancing institutional capacities, harmonizing procedures with European standards, and implementing the Schengen acquis.
The meeting also included the signing of a Cooperation Plan between the General Inspectorate of the Border Police and the State Border Guard Service of the Republic of Lithuania for the years 2027–2028. This document aims to deepen bilateral cooperation and leverage Lithuanian experience in applying European border management standards.
The meeting's program featured a working visit to the Costești Border Police Sector, where the delegations learned about the subdivision's operations, technical equipment, and the capabilities used to ensure the security of the state border.
In recognition of their contributions to international cooperation and the support extended to the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Daniella Misail-Nichitin, presented awards from the Ministry of Internal Affairs to the heads of the border authorities of Latvia, Lithuania, and Ukraine.
The Border Police emphasizes that the inaugural meeting of the four border authorities marks an important step in strengthening strategic dialogue and cooperation among the institutions responsible for securing the borders of the four states.
The institution also notes that the establishment of this cooperation framework demonstrates the solidarity and shared commitment of the partners to support the European aspirations of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, providing an effective platform for exchanging experiences, transferring expertise, and finding common solutions in the realm of border security and integrated management.
