Lando Norris takes Hungarian Grand Prix victory as Piastri retires from the lead
Lando Norris won the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday at the Hungaroring, claiming his first victory of the 2026 season and his first race win since becoming world champion last year. The Briton started from pole position but lost the lead at the first corner.
Oscar Piastri, starting third on the grid, passed both Charles Leclerc and Norris into Turn 1 to take the lead. McLaren's two drivers then dominated the race, and a dominant one-two finish for the British constructor looked assured.
That prospect collapsed with 14 laps to go. Piastri retired on lap 56 of 70 after a gearbox failure ended his race.
Max Verstappen capitalized on Piastri's retirement to finish second, 15 seconds behind Norris. Kimi Antonelli, this season's breakout driver, took third.
Antonelli's podium extended his championship lead to 50 points over second-placed Lewis Hamilton after 11 rounds. George Russell sits third in the standings, nine points behind Hamilton.
The season continues on August 23 with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.
