Eugen Tomac: Romania has a key role in advancing Moldova's European path
Romania has established bilateral mechanisms to support and expedite the European integration process of the Republic of Moldova, said Romanian MEP Eugen Tomac in an interview with antena3.ro.
One key area of focus is the development of a common communication space between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. The mutual access of media institutions to each other's markets would significantly support both countries in their European integration efforts and in combating propaganda, according to Tomac.
"I would like all media entities from the Republic of Moldova to have access to the Romanian market, and likewise, I want all television and radio stations from Romania to have access to the market of the Republic of Moldova. These measures complement the integration process; we just need to notify the European Commission. We have a well-regulated European legal framework regarding this issue, which allows us to assist the Republic of Moldova more effectively in combating aggressive and harmful Russian propaganda. In addition to my role in the European Parliament's Labor Committee, I am also part of the working group focused on Combating Disinformation. I believe it is crucial that this shield of democracy is supported by such initiatives," the Romanian MEP stated.
Eugen Tomac also recognized the progress made by the Republic of Moldova in its European Union accession process, highlighting the importance of the reforms undertaken by its government.
"The Republic of Moldova has been given a clear path toward EU membership as a response to demonstrating that the EU treats its vulnerable neighbors with utmost responsibility, especially since they seek a transparent European agenda. The Republic of Moldova has succeeded because it has a government that is determined to implement all necessary reforms in its relationship with the EU. Recently, we received significant signals suggesting that after the elections in Hungary, Budapest has become much more flexible regarding the unanimous consensus needed to initiate accession negotiations. The opening of the first fundamental rights cluster on June 15 in Luxembourg sends a strong political message that the Republic of Moldova is on a secure path to European integration," the official added.
As a reminder, the Republic of Moldova has taken another step in the EU accession process. On July 14, a new group of negotiation chapters was officially opened, covering foreign policy, security, defense, and common commercial policy.
Our country submitted its application for EU membership in 2022, alongside Ukraine, shortly after the onset of the large-scale Russian invasion. In the same year, the Republic of Moldova was granted candidate status.
