Sandu anchors Moldova’s future in EU on Constitution Day
Moldovan President Maia Sandu marked Constitution Day on July 29 by emphasizing the vital role of the supreme law in strengthening the rule of law and reaffirming European integration as the nation's definitive strategic direction.
Speaking on the 32nd anniversary of the document's adoption, Sandu described the constitution as a fundamental pact bridging the nation's past and future.
"Today we mark 32 years since the adoption of the Constitution—a true generational covenant between those who forged the independence of the Republic of Moldova and those to whom we owe a democratic, peaceful, and prosperous country," the President stated.
Sandu stressed that for more than three decades, the basic law has served as the legal and moral bedrock of the state, safeguarding citizens' fundamental rights and human dignity regardless of background or language.
European course enshrined in the supreme law
The Moldovan head of state highlighted that the nation's path toward European Union membership is now firmly anchored within the constitutional framework.
"Today, the Constitution enshrines our collective choice to build the future of the Republic of Moldova within the European Union," Sandu said. She added that this path remains the sole guarantee for preserving peace and remaining part of the free world.
Moldova adopted its constitution on July 29, 1994, replacing the 1978 Soviet-era fundamental law. The document entered into force on August 27 of the same year following earlier amendments post-sovereignty in 1990 and independence in 1991.
In recent years, the constitution has undergone pivotal updates, including the formal reconfirmation of Romanian as the state language in 2023 and the inclusion of EU integration as a strategic national goal following the October 2024 referendum.
