PSRM pushes Moldovan government for teacher pay raise and child aid
Moldova’s opposition Party of Socialists (PSRM) has called on the parliamentary majority to secure funding for a 30% wage increase for education workers starting in October. The party also requested €51 (approx. 1,000 MDL) one-off allowance for families with middle-school students to cover back-to-school expenses.
In response, government officials maintained that boosting civil service pay and expanding social assistance remain top priorities for the executive.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, July 29, PSRM lawmakers Ala Ursu-Antoci and Vladimir Odnostalco stated that the proposed wage hike must apply across the board. The measure would cover school teachers, early childhood educators, university lecturers, and administrative support staff.
Ursu-Antoci argued that current remuneration fails to provide an adequate standard of living for educators. She urged the government to reallocate funds from exorbitant official salaries toward public education support.
The opposition also proposed providing the €51 payment to every student in grades 1 through 9 before September 1. Lawmakers cited widespread financial hardship, arguing that many families cannot afford essential school supplies, clothing, and footwear amid rising utility bills.
Education Minister Dan Perciun addressed the demands during a televised interview, noting that September salaries are routinely disbursed in early October. He emphasized that the administration is working to fulfill its budgetary commitments on schedule.
Perciun explained that officials are currently processing an extensive summary of proposals regarding the public sector pay framework. He added that the Prime Minister instructed the ministry to present the adjusted fiscal policy framework by August 6.
The government previously announced a similar €51 financial assistance initiative in June 2025 for the 2025–2026 academic year. That program covered approximately 295,000 primary and middle-school pupils across both public and private institutions.
