Moldovan PM makes inaugural foreign visit to Romania for EU talks
Romanian President Nicușor Dan reaffirmed full support for the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union during high-level meetings at Cotroceni Palace on Thursday, July 30.
The discussions marked the inaugural official foreign trip of Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan since assuming office.
The meeting centered on regional security challenges stemming from Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and its spillover impact on neighboring states. Both leaders underscored the necessity of close coordination to maintain regional stability.
Expanding cross-border energy and transport infrastructure
The two delegations reviewed key joint strategic infrastructure and energy initiatives. Official discussions welcomed the recent signing of the agreement for the new Ungheni bridge, an essential link for the upcoming A8 motorway connection, alongside the execution contract for section IV of the highway.
President Nicușor Dan reiterated firm backing for Moldova's European integration path, welcoming the formal opening of the initial EU negotiation clusters.
Prime Minister Tofan expressed gratitude for Romania's unwavering assistance, describing the bilateral relationship as a strategic partnership built on trust and sincere friendship.
"We continue to work together on tangible initiatives that bring us closer every day and deliver concrete results for our citizens," Tofan stated.
Broader diplomatic and business engagements
The Moldovan delegation, which included Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure Vladimir Bolea alongside Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu, highlighted plans for new bridge builds, power grid expansions, and foreign investment attraction. Following the presidential meeting, Prime Minister Tofan scheduled discussions with the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Sorin Grindeanu, and the President of the Senate, Mircea Abrudean.
The visit concludes with a dedicated session alongside the Bessarabian Business Club to foster regional investment and support trade cooperation.
