Suspended prison sentence for "Aunt Raia"; Prosecutors challenge court ruling
The protagonists of an investigation conducted by journalists from Ziarul de Garda revealed how individuals working for Ilan Shor were recruited to serve Moscow. As a result, "Aunt Raia" whose real name is Raisa Surdu, was sentenced to three years in prison, with the sentence suspended.
Prosecutors allege that between June and October 2024, a woman worked in support of the "Victory" Bloc, which is affiliated with Ilan Șor, and coordinated activities in the Dobrogea region.
She is accused of collecting voter information to open bank accounts and transfer money to individuals in an effort to sway votes during the constitutional referendum and the presidential elections scheduled for October 20, 2024.
Anti-corruption prosecutors have announced their intention to appeal the sentence at the Central Court of Appeal.
Additionally, two men were found guilty of complicity in this scheme. They received sentences of two years and six months in prison and two years, respectively, but both sentences were suspended, with a three-year probation period. If they violate the law during this probation period, they will serve their prison time.
