Government launches a plan for a defense system to address new security risks
The Republic of Moldova plans to modernize its national defense system by 2030. This involves developing capabilities tailored to current security risks and training a professional workforce. On Wednesday, the government approved the Implementation Program for 2026–2030, which is part of the National Defense Strategy for the period 2024–2034.
The document outlines measures aimed at strengthening the country's sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity, as well as protecting the constitutional order.
The program approved by the Executive sets forth actions to guide the development of the national defense system over the next five years. The goal is to enhance the response capacity of defense institutions and their ability to adapt to the challenges posed by the current security environment.
This document includes provisions for modernising national defence capabilities, integrating the Republic of Moldova into the European Union's security framework, and bolstering bilateral, regional, and international cooperation in defence and security. Additionally, the authorities aim to increase Moldova's contributions to regional and international security, including participation in peacekeeping missions and operations.
Minister of Defense Anatolie Nosatîi stated that the document outlines essential measures for adapting the defense system to meet new security challenges.
"In the current security context, implementing the National Defense Strategy Program is a crucial step toward strengthening the state’s defense capabilities. Through a unified national effort and concrete actions, we aim to enhance the country's resilience, respond effectively to hybrid threats, and safeguard democratic values while ensuring a secure environment for our citizens," the Minister of Defense said.
According to the authorities, the implementation of the program will lead to the development of a modern defense system capable of effectively addressing current risks and threats, thus contributing to the security of the Republic of Moldova. This aligns with the objectives of the National Defense Strategy for the period 2024–2034.
