Over 3,600 Moldovans receive free state-funded heart surgery
More than 3,600 patients in Moldova received state-funded cardiovascular surgery during the first half of 2026. All procedures were fully covered by the Mandatory Health Insurance Fund (AOAM).
According to the National Health Insurance Company (CNAM), allocations for cardiovascular surgeries reached approximately €11.2 million (219 million MDL) in the first six months of the year.
Breakdown of cardiac procedures
The total number of interventions included roughly 2,600 minimally invasive procedures for adults suffering from acute myocardial infarction.
Additionally, surgeons performed 46 minimally invasive operations for congenital heart defects and over 1,000 other open-heart procedures.
Treatment costs within these specialized cardiac programs vary significantly based on complexity. Costs range from around €3,400 (67,000 MDL) for minimally invasive adult procedures to €10,200 (200,000 MDL) for complex cardiovascular surgeries.
Advanced diagnostics and hospital coverage
During the same period, CNAM funded 264 cases under the electrophysiological study and ablation program. The initiative provides modern diagnostic and treatment solutions for complex cardiac arrhythmias.
The state allocated roughly €663,000 (13 million MDL) for these specialized arrhythmia treatments, including the purchase of high-cost medical consumables.
Cardiovascular procedures are provided free of charge to all insured individuals in Moldova, covering both emergency admissions and scheduled surgeries.
To access planned procedures, insured citizens must consult their family doctor or a specialist physician. The doctor issues a medical referral and arranges the necessary preliminary laboratory and instrumental tests in accordance with national clinical protocols.
In 2026, these life-saving procedures were performed across six CNAM-contracted medical facilities, split evenly between three public hospitals and three private clinics.
