The U.S. Embassy in Chișinău welcomes the confirmation of Joseph Burkhalter as ambassador to the Republic of Moldova
The United States of America will soon have a new ambassador in Chișinău, after the U.S. Senate confirmed the appointment of diplomat Joseph Burkhalter as U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Moldova. The announcement was made by the U.S. Embassy in Chișinău, which congratulated the ambassador-designate.
*“Congratulations to Ambassador-designate Joseph Burkhalter on his confirmation by the U.S. Senate as the next U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Moldova," the U.S. Embassy in Chișinău said in a public message.
The American diplomatic mission said it looks forward to the arrival of the new ambassador in the Republic of Moldova and to continuing cooperation between the two countries.
“We look forward to welcoming Ambassador-designate Burkhalter to Chișinău and working together to further strengthen the enduring partnership between the United States and the Republic of Moldova”, the statement reads.
Joseph Burkhalter’s confirmation by the U.S. Senate comes several months after the U.S. administration submitted his nomination to the legislature for the position of ambassador to the Republic of Moldova. According to information previously presented by the White House, Burkhalter is a U.S. diplomat from the state of Georgia and is part of a larger group of candidates proposed for diplomatic posts in several countries around the world.
His appointment brings to an end a period during which the United States did not have a fully accredited ambassador in Chișinău. The position remained vacant after the end of Kent D. Logsdon’s tenure, who represented the U.S. in the Republic of Moldova from December 2021 until the end of May 2024.
Currently, the U.S. Embassy in Chișinău is headed by Nick Pietrowicz, who has served as chargé d’affaires since August 2025.
At the end of his tenure, former ambassador Kent D. Logsdon was decorated by President Maia Sandu with the “Order of Honor," in recognition of his contribution to deepening Moldovan-American relations.
Joseph Burkhalter’s arrival in Chișinău is expected to mark a new stage in political dialogue and cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the United States, in a context in which the bilateral partnership has strengthened significantly in recent years.
