From crop to juice: €405k modernization in Moldovan farming
Vasile Spînu, a tomato grower from Ratuș village in the Criuleni District, has upgraded his processing operations to capture higher value from his harvest. By converting raw produce into tomato juice, the farm secures an additional revenue stream directly from its five-hectare cultivation.
To scale operations, the farmer secured a loan to invest €405,000 (approx. 8 million MDL) into modernizing his processing facility adjacent to the fields. With expected harvest yields reaching 70 to 80 tonnes per hectare, Spînu anticipates recovering a portion of the investment during the current season.
Automated processing streamlines farm operations
The upgraded production line incorporates both manual quality control and automated technology. Worker selection marks the first stage, followed by an automated bubbling wash, thorough rinsing, and final inspection.
The modernized equipment has significantly reduced manual labor and improved operational efficiency. Employees report cleaner working conditions and streamlined workflows compared to previous seasons.
Traditional varieties drive steady consumer demand
Finished products are sold directly to consumers, who favor the juice for its authentic flavor and traceable origin. Regular buyers report relying on the farm's output for nearly a decade due to consistent product quality.
To secure the raw material required for processing, Spînu previously modernized his agricultural land and constructed greenhouses using Italian technology. The crop relies partly on traditional heirloom tomato varieties preserved over generations, prized for their superior taste and processing characteristics.
