How a Moldovan village built an economic engine out of farming
Home to more residents than several district capitals, the village of Costești generates nearly a quarter of the Ialoveni district's total business revenue. The local economy is a primary driver of national trade, accounting for roughly 40% of Moldova's honey exports.
Local companies in Costești generate an annual turnover of nearly €45.9 million (approx. 900 million MDL). The surrounding region also supports nearly 1,000 table grape producers.
Entrepreneurs press for infrastructure upgrades
During a recent visit by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, local business leaders highlighted critical operational bottlenecks. Their primary concerns focused on the lack of irrigation systems, inadequate post-harvest infrastructure, and unpredictable agricultural subsidies.
Representatives from the fruit and apiculture sectors requested technological modernization, expanded cold storage capacity, and a stable fiscal framework to support long-term private investment.
Government pledges market access and modernization
In response, Prime Minister Tofan assured business owners that the cabinet would prioritize clearing administrative hurdles, modernizing processing capacity, and improving market access.
"We must invest in tools that allow our entrepreneurs to scale faster: irrigation, technology, post-harvest infrastructure, processing, and better market access," Tofan stated. "Costești demonstrates what a community can achieve through initiative and hard work. Our job is to help them reach their full potential."
Diaspora capital and innovative municipal financing
Government officials emphasized that diaspora contributions remain a vital component of the capital invested in the community.
Costești has also gained national recognition for issuing municipal bonds early on. This innovative financial tool successfully mobilized savings from citizens working abroad, turning foreign earnings into direct investments for local development.
"I deeply admire the entrepreneurial drive here—Costești is a village with the economic muscle of a city," Tofan concluded. "Residents produce, invest, export, and constantly look for ways to improve. It makes me optimistic about the future of rural Moldova."
