Moldova's largest watermelon was officially weighed in Causeni
A remarkably large watermelon has become the highlight of the agricultural season. Weighing an impressive seventy-four kilograms, this giant fruit may soon break the national record. The achievement comes from a farmer in the village of Hagimus, located in the Căușeni district, and a local commission was present to officially monitor the weighing process.
Farmer Sergiu Surschi has long dreamed of achieving such a remarkable harvest and intends to make the most of his success.
“I have always dreamed of growing gigantic watermelons. I plan to put them up for auction and use the money I earn to reinvest in agriculture,” confessed Sergiu Surschi.
The secret behind his record harvest lies in a unique grafting technique: the watermelons in his field were grafted onto pumpkin stems. The farmer emphasizes that he did not use any chemicals or pesticides to promote growth.
“I grafted the watermelons onto pumpkin stems. I cut the melon roots and quickly joined them to the pumpkin stems using special clips. Then, I placed them in glasses, and within ten days, the graft took root. After that, I planted them in the greenhouse. In total, we had about fifteen hundred seedlings. Spring was challenging due to frost, but I kept warm by making a fire in the fireplace whenever I knew the cold was coming,” the farmer explained.
To formalize his performance, the farmer sought assistance from local authorities, who arranged for a weighing under strict metrological conditions.
“To conduct the official weighing, we required an authorized and certified scale. We approached the management of the Căușeni Elevator, which provided us with the necessary equipment to accurately assess the true weight of the melon,” stated Pavel Curuș, head of the Agriculture and Food Section of the Căușeni District Council.
The largest watermelon ever recorded weighed 159 kilograms and was set in 2013 in Tennessee, USA.
