SMURD team evacuates young survivor of Halkidiki crash
A seven-year-old girl, the sole survivor of a fatal car accident in Greece that claimed the lives of her parents and six-month-old sister, arrived in Chisinau overnight on August 15. Nearly a month after the tragedy, she was admitted to the Mother and Child Institute for ongoing medical treatment.
A SMURD emergency crew from Moldova’s General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) evacuated the child by land from the Papageorgiou General Hospital in Thessaloniki on August 13. The medical team provided continuous monitoring throughout the journey, delivering her safely to the hospital in Chisinau at 02:00 AM.
Background of the tragedy
The crash occurred on July 15 in the Halkidiki region of Greece when the vehicle carrying the Sirbu family collided with a tanker truck. The child's mother and infant sister died at the scene, while her father succumbed to his injuries shortly after in the hospital.
The young survivor sustained severe injuries, including multiple rib fractures, a pneumothorax, a femur fracture, and extensive facial and head trauma. Emergency responders initially stabilized her at Polygyros General Hospital before transferring her to intensive care in Thessaloniki.
Following the tragedy, the family was buried in their hometown of Straseni on July 23. The young girl has since been placed under the legal guardianship of her aunt.
