Diplomacy across generations: Moldova honors 35 years of statehood
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs inaugurated a landmark photo-documentary exhibition on Tuesday at the National Museum of History of Moldova. Titled "Diplomacy across generations: 35 years of dialogue, trust, and cooperation," the event marks the 35th anniversary of the Republic of Moldova’s proclamation of independence.
The ceremony brought together veteran and serving foreign ministers, ambassadors, diplomats, and members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Chișinău. Participants reflected on the defining milestones of Moldova’s foreign service and foreign policy over the past three and a half decades.
Generations united in national interest
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi opened the inauguration ceremony. He emphasized the decisive role played by successive generations of diplomats in consolidating statehood, securing international recognition, and advancing citizen interests.
"The success of our diplomacy reflects the tireless dedication of multiple generations," Popșoi stated. "These 35 years represent remarkable achievements, forged amidst the immense challenges we faced from the very first days of our independence. We will remain present wherever our citizens and our national interests require us".
Foundations of statehood and the European trajectory
Nicolae Țâu, Moldova’s first foreign minister, recalled the complex early days of building diplomatic institutions from the ground up. He noted that while 35 years is brief in global history, the intense pace of this era demonstrates an active, serious diplomatic service.
Former Foreign Minister Mihai Popov underlined how the country's foreign policy priorities have evolved toward greater complexity. He stressed the imperative to seize the historic opportunity to anchor Moldova within the European Union while safeguarding the diaspora.
In a video address, former Foreign Minister Natalia Gherman highlighted tangible accomplishments, including EU visa liberalization and the Association Agreement. "Diplomacy finds its true worth when its results reach people and transform lives," Gherman affirmed.
International recognition and future outlook
Speaking on behalf of the diplomatic corps, Polish Ambassador Tomasz Kobzdej praised Moldova’s diplomatic achievements in securing concrete international alliances. He noted that the diplomatic corps played a pivotal role in placing Moldova on the front line of the EU’s new enlargement wave.
The exhibition remains open to visitors until September 25. Across 35 thematic panels, it presents rare archival photographs and documents charting the nation's journey—from hoisting the State Flag at the United Nations to advancing its European integration.
