Moldova plans €15m education overhaul to modernize schools
Moldova will launch a nationwide school curriculum reform in September 2027, introducing Estonian-aligned mathematics, earlier computer science classes, and modern textbooks, Education and Research Minister Dan Perciun said.
Speaking on public broadcaster Moldova 1, Perciun outlined a comprehensive modernization plan designed to reduce theoretical overload and emphasize practical, real-world skills across primary and secondary education.
Under the new framework, schools will align mathematics fully with Estonia’s curriculum, introducing translated and adapted textbooks. Computer science will be taught starting in the fifth grade, focusing on algorithmic thinking and programming, while technology classes will expand into robotics, 3D printing, and FabLab engineering.
The ministry is also restructuring twentieth-century history education, bringing contemporary studies forward to the eighth grade. The updated syllabus will place greater emphasis on Soviet-era repressions, deportations, the postwar famine, and the 1992 Dniester War of Independence.
The government plans to invest €7.45 million (approx. 150 million Moldovan lei) next year to produce a new generation of full-color textbooks, followed by an equivalent allocation in 2028, bringing total textbook funding to approximately €14.9 million.
