Moldova alerts citizens near Gyirong after Nepal disaster
Moldova’s embassy in Beijing issued an urgent travel warning on Wednesday after catastrophic flash floods and landslides triggered by a glacial collapse killed more than 270 people along the China-Nepal border.
The diplomatic mission urged Moldovan nationals in the Gyirong border area to follow local emergency directives and establish contact immediately if they require consular assistance. More than 1,300 people remain missing, including at least 700 foreign nationals from 29 countries, international news agencies reported.
“Anyone holding information about Moldovan citizens in the affected region is asked to notify the diplomatic mission,” the embassy said in a statement, adding that its emergency hotline operates 24/7. Moldova's Foreign Ministry noted that it has not yet confirmed whether any Moldovan citizens are among the missing or casualties.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the disaster occurred when a massive ice block broke away and crashed into a mountain river, unleashing torrents that destroyed bridges, roads, and hydropower facilities. The devastation has severely hampered search and rescue operations across Nepal's Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts in Bagmati Province.
