Riga blocks Russian print media and consumer imports over security
A sweeping ban on the import of several consumer goods from Russia and Belarus took effect in Latvia on September 1. The trade restrictions apply both to direct shipments and to goods routed through non-EU third countries, Latvian outlet Delfi and Meduza reported.
The measure follows legislative amendments passed by the Latvian parliament in late July.
Scope of the embargo
The banned list covers printed materials such as books, newspapers, and periodicals, as well as apparel, footwear, headgear, toys, games, and sports equipment.
The restrictions do not apply to goods arriving from within the European Union. Under the current rules, products manufactured in Russia or Belarus remain eligible for entry if they are shipped to Latvia from another EU member state, such as Lithuania.
Security and counter-propaganda goals
The government in Riga stated that the ban aims to defend Latvia's national security interests and cut export revenue streams for Moscow and Minsk.
Officials also emphasized that restricting printed matter will limit the circulation of Russian propaganda materials across the country.
