Moldova issues seven-step guide for winter biomass heating

Moldova's Energy Ministry on Tuesday urged public institutions and consumers to prepare biomass heating systems ahead of the cold season, issuing a seven-step checklist to ensure operational safety and fuel efficiency.
The recommendations target municipal facilities, schools, and private households relying on solid biofuel as Chisinau works to expand renewable heating and reduce dependence on imported natural gas.
Fuel standards and staff readiness
Authorities highlighted early fuel procurement as the critical first step, advising users to secure certified pellets and briquettes meeting technical boiler specifications. “Plan resources in advance and select high-quality biofuel that meets requirements,” the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry also called on facility managers to provide adequate training for boiler technicians to prevent operational hazards. “Ensure that personnel are well prepared in operating the equipment,” the advisory stated.
Pre-season inspections and boiler commissioning
Before igniting heating units, operators must conduct comprehensive technical audits, focusing on pressure gauges, ventilation, and chimney integrity. “Check the technical condition of the equipment, from water pressure to chimney safety,” the ministry said.
Once technical clearance is confirmed, staff should follow standard protocols for ignition, calibration, and monitoring. “Follow every step for connection, adjustment, and monitoring to maintain a functional and efficient system,” the institution added.

Winter maintenance, decommissioning, and storage
Maintenance must continue throughout the winter, requiring routine ash removal, cleaning, and prompt troubleshooting. After the heating season concludes, boilers should undergo thorough decontamination and conservation before being decommissioned for the summer months. “Clean, inspect, and provide optimal conditions for preserving the equipment,” the ministry noted.
Finally, authorities warned that improper storage degrades biofuel and creates fire hazards, recommending dry and ventilated facilities. “Apply these steps to guarantee the safety and efficiency of biomass heating systems,” the ministry said.
