Moldova aims to enhance economic ties and partnership with Hungary
The Republic of Moldova aims to strengthen its strategic partnership with Hungary, which was initiated in 2020. President Maia Sandu conveyed this interest during a phone call with Hungary's Prime Minister, Péter Magyar.
Two officials discussed bilateral relations, focusing on economic cooperation and opportunities for expanding trade and investment.
Another agenda item was the Republic of Moldova's European path, as reported by the Presidency in Chișinău.
Regarding Moldova's accession to the European Union, the President expressed gratitude to Hungary for its support and reiterated the country's commitment to reforms, state modernization, and alignment with European standards, according to the press release.
The Head of State and Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar also discussed the security situation in the region, which has been significantly impacted by Russia's war against Ukraine. They agreed to maintain a constant dialogue at a high level.
During a phone conversation between Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and Hungary’s Prime Minister, the Republic of Moldova's European path was a central topic. Prime Minister Tofan emphasized the Government's determination to continue reforms and to progress steadily in the accession negotiations, based on the achievements and results accomplished by the country.
In this context, the Head of the Executive stressed the importance of Hungary's support for continuing the European Union enlargement process and advancing Moldova towards the next stages of the accession negotiations, including the opening of new clusters in the near future.
The two prime ministers also discussed strengthening the Moldovan-Hungarian partnership, emphasizing the development of economic relations. They expressed mutual interest in expanding trade, attracting investments, and seizing new opportunities for cooperation between companies from both countries.
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and Prime Minister Péter Magyar agreed to maintain close dialogue and continue enhancing cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and Hungary, including support for Moldova's strategic objective of accession to the European Union.
Hungary is currently blocking EU decisions related to Ukraine's accession, which also affects Moldova's progress in this area. Most recently, during a meeting on September 8, Hungary vetoed the approval of the screening of clusters 2 and 3 in the accession negotiations of Ukraine and Moldova for the third time, citing dissatisfaction with the protection of national minorities in Ukraine, as reported by IPN.
So far, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine have opened negotiations for clusters 1 and 6, titled "Fundamental Values" and "External Relations," respectively.
