Brussels moves to tender €120M air defense for Moldova

The European Union will launch procurement tenders within weeks for a €120 million (approx. 2.41 billion MDL) medium-range air defense system for Moldova, European Commission officials confirmed.

Procurement phases underway

Financed through the European Peace Facility (EPF), the assistance measure has officially entered implementation, although Brussels has not yet set a definitive delivery timetable.

“The implementation of this assistance measure has already begun,” European Commission spokesperson Christian Wigand told TVR Moldova. “We expect the next stages—contracting, tendering, and procurement—to start in the coming weeks.”

The clarification follows statements made earlier this week by Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi, who cautioned that an integrated defense network capable of detecting and intercepting aerial threats could take up to three years to become operational.

Layered airspace security

Meanwhile, short-range air defense capabilities funded under the 2024 and 2025 EPF assistance packages are already advancing through the procurement pipeline.

“Short-range air defense equipment funded through the 2024 and 2025 EPF assistance measures is already being acquired,” Wigand said. “Air surveillance equipment funded under the 2023 assistance measure has already been delivered and is actively supporting Moldova’s airspace monitoring capabilities.”

The €120 million allocation for the medium-range battery brings total EU military support for Moldova under the EPF to €317 million since 2021. Established in March 2021 to support Common Foreign and Security Policy defense initiatives, the fund positions Moldova as its second-largest beneficiary worldwide, trailing only Ukraine.
