Global democracy report sees Moldova drop across all four metrics
Moldova dropped across all four categories assessed in the Global State of Democracy 2026 report, published by International IDEA, reflecting a broader worldwide trend of democratic decline and institutional stagnation.
Downturn in global governance benchmarks
The intergovernmental organization ranked Moldova 71st out of 173 surveyed countries in Representation, 54th in Rights, 68th in the Rule of Law, and 90th in Participation. The downward movement aligns the country with an increasingly fragile international landscape undermined by deteriorating global security.
According to the report, 57% of evaluated countries suffered declines in at least one democratic performance metric compared to five years ago, while only 32% recorded progress.
Heightened risks of political instability
International IDEA warned that states trapped in environments with formal procedures but lacking genuine political competition and guaranteed rights face heightened vulnerability to instability.
The study further underscored that regimes undergoing democratic backsliding show stronger correlations with the escalation of violent conflict, urging decisive policy interventions to reverse these contractions.
