Master Andrei Negură held an exhibition at the "Constantin Brâncuși" Gallery
He has been honored by French authorities with the Gold Medal for his contribution to the development of universal visual arts and holds numerous other national and international distinctions; now, the Union of Visual Artists of the Republic of Moldova has nominated him for the National Prize. It is about the master Andrei Negură, whose work blends Romanian cultural tradition with contemporary artistic language. A solo exhibition by the artist, evocatively titled "Ode to Joy: A Turmoil of Light," has opened at the "Constantin Brâncuși" Gallery.
An exploration of Andrei Negură’s artistic universe is a journey through the various stages of his creative output—from the renowned tapestries crafted in the 1990s to numerous painting cycles such as Festive, Procession, and Symphonies.
"My most recent focus has been on Revelations. I gave my imagination free rein. An artist’s message is to offer hope—to provide an impetus toward the sun, toward joy, toward happiness. That is why the exhibition is titled Ode to Joy: A Stirring of Light—or A Stirring of Color," the artist explained.
In his work, Andrei Negură has harmoniously blended Romanian cultural tradition with contemporary artistic language.
"He is an artist who, from the very beginning, has explored both the realm of textile arts and painting—a style of painting created through multiple layers of color. It is, therefore, a complex form of painting, just as the artist himself is complex," notes Florina Breazu, President of the Union of Visual Artists.
"Andrei Negură is an innovator within our national artistic landscape—a highly inspired and sensitive painter. This is an exhibition inspired by music and by Romanian frescoes," said artist Vasile Dohotaru.
Nicolae Vrânceanu travelled specifically from Brașov to attend Andrei Negură’s exhibition.
"The color—and especially the spontaneity—are qualities you don't find in other paintings."
"I have known Andrei since 1977. I am delighted that he works so intensely and is brimming with ideas—and not just ideas, but also the ability to give them expression, thereby connecting us to his inner world. He is a painter who radiates light—both as a person and through his art," says filmmaker Mihai Poiată.
Andrei Negură was born on August 16, 1956, in the village of Echimăuți, Rezina District. Museums across Europe and the United States hold his works. The exhibition "Ode to Joy: The Turmoil of Light" is on view at the Constantin Brâncuși Gallery until October 11.
