European Foreign Ministers, including Romania, demand that the EU sanction Russian oligarchs from the Republic of Moldova and Georgia
Several European foreign ministers, including Romania's, have called for the European Union (EU) to sanction the oligarchs involved in "destabilization attempts" in the Republic of Moldova and Georgia, amid growing fears of Russian interference .
French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said that these two countries are facing attempts at destabilization that require the utmost vigilance from the EU.
According to politico.eu, both his counterparts from Romania, Bogdan Aurescu, as well as the foreign minister from Estonia asked the bloc to sanction pro-Russian oligarchs from the Republic of Moldova.
Estonian Urmas Reinsalu said that the EU has the responsibility to nominate them and to create a new sanctions mechanism against Russian intermediaries, against those Moldovan oligarchs who are preparing a coup d'état.
Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine has raised fears of Moscow's interference in former Soviet republics — especially in the Republic of Moldova, whose pro-EU president has publicly exposed the Kremlin's plans to topple the government, reports Politico.
