New US envoy Burkhalter submits credentials in Moldova

United States Ambassador-designate Joseph Mark Burkhalter presented copies of his credentials on Monday, September 28, to Head of State Diplomatic Protocol Eugen Buga during a ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The milestone marks an important step in strengthening bilateral relations and advancing cooperation between the United States and the Republic of Moldova, according to the U.S. Embassy in Chișinău.

Diplomatic mission underway

Burkhalter arrived in Chișinău on September 25, accompanied by his wife. In an initial arrival message, the diplomat conveyed his intent to explore the country and deepen bilateral partnership.

During his first days in the capital, Burkhalter visited the Stephen the Great Central Park, the monument of the medieval ruler, as well as the Parliament, Government, and Presidential administration headquarters.

“We look forward to getting to know your country better and meeting as many of you as possible,” said the American diplomat.

Senate confirmation and succession

A native of Georgia, Burkhalter received U.S. Senate confirmation as Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova in early August, following his nomination by the U.S. administration.

The last fully accredited American ambassador in Chișinău was Kent D. Logsdon, who served from December 2021 until the end of May 2024. Following his mission, President Maia Sandu awarded Logsdon the "Order of Honor" for his contribution to bilateral ties.

Since August 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Chișinău had been headed by Nick Pietrowicz as Chargé d’Affaires.
