Merz in Kyiv: "Ukraine needs our support soon"

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on the morning of October 4 for an unannounced visit. DW reports it is the German head of government's first visit to Ukraine since May 2025.

"I have come to Kyiv today because Ukraine needs our support in the coming weeks. If Russia is not stopped, its war machine will sooner or later turn against us," Merz stated upon his arrival at the Kyiv train station.
"The people are about to face their fifth winter of war. Russia is bombing cities, residential buildings, and thermal power plants. Terror cannot defeat the Ukrainians," the German Chancellor said.
Merz added that he would meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and assure him of Germany's continued support for Ukraine.
"Our partnership is a two-way street," the Chancellor said, adding that the joint efforts of German and Ukrainian companies "make us more secure and stronger."
