Moldova's capital expands as urban economy drives growth

Chisinau's population surpassed 714,000 residents as Moldova's capital expanded its economic and construction footprint ahead of its 590th anniversary, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics.
Economic output and labor market
The statistical profile reflects sustained demographic and commercial momentum across the capital of the EU-candidate nation. In 2025, nearly 7,000 children were born in Chisinau, while educational institutions accommodated over 196,000 pupils and university students.
The capital's formal workforce counted approximately 279,000 employed individuals. Average monthly gross earnings reached €960 (approx. 18,708 MDL), anchored by the reference exchange rate of the National Bank of Moldova, signaling steady household income levels amid nationwide recovery trends.
Infrastructure development and public transit
Intensifying municipal activity placed heavy demand on urban infrastructure throughout the past year. Chisinau's public transit network registered an estimated 286 million passenger journeys, while licensed travel agencies serviced roughly 470,000 clients.
The construction sector served as a primary engine of urban expansion. Completed building projects totaled €895 million (approx. 17.4 billion MDL), resulting in the commissioning of approximately 5.8 million square meters of new housing, the statistical agency reported.
Municipal assets and cultural infrastructure currently include 423 healthcare institutions, 95 cultural centers, and more than 4,425 hectares of public green spaces. The milestone follows the city's traditional City Patron Day on October 14, marking 590 years since its earliest recorded mention in 1436.
