PA and CNA will investigate high-level corruption and systemic corruption. The government approved changes in the law

The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office (PA) and the National Anticorruption Center (CNA) will focus their capacities on grand corruption, the powers of these two institutions being delimited. At the proposal of the Ministry of Justice, the Government approved changes in the Code of Criminal Procedure. The measure is also imposed in the context of the realization of the commitments assumed in the Action Plan for the implementation of the recommendations of the European Commission.

The criminal investigation for high-level corruption will be carried out by the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office, while the CNA will investigate systemic corruption. At the same time, petty corruption will be investigated by the criminal investigation body of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) which will cooperate with the CNA. The changes aim to focus the capacities of certain institutions on grand corruption and were necessary considering that both the CNA and the PA are currently overloaded with petty corruption cases. The clear delimitation of the powers between the authorities responsible for investigating the causes of corruption will ensure the fulfillment of the conditionalities of the Action Plan for the implementation of the measures proposed by the European Commission in its Opinion on the application for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the EU, as well as the Memorandum on the economic policies and financial agreement concluded with the IMF.
