European funds renovate 10 hospitals in Chișinău and Bălți, saving nearly three million euros annually

Nine hospitals in Chișinău and one in Bălți will be renovated under a European-funded program, which will also improve their energy efficiency. The project aims to reduce energy consumption by up to 41%, generate annual savings of nearly three million euros, and provide better conditions for one million patients and over 10,000 medical staff.

In addition to the direct benefits for the healthcare system, the project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 6,600 tonnes annually—an amount equivalent to the emissions generated by driving a car for approximately 26 million kilometers. This will help protect the environment and improve air quality.

In total, 16 hospital buildings will undergo energy-efficiency renovations; 15 of these will be equipped with photovoltaic panels with a capacity exceeding 1,100 kW, capable of generating 1.36 million kWh of renewable energy per year.

Each institution receives a bespoke design tailored to its specific needs to ensure the efficiency and sustainability of the energy-optimisation measures.

The first beneficiary institutions are the "Diomid Gherman" Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery and the Clinical Psychiatric Hospital in Chișinău.

The interventions will focus on the thermal insulation of walls and roofs, the replacement of windows and doors, the modernization of heating, lighting, and ventilation systems, as well as the installation of photovoltaic panels to generate clean electricity directly on the hospital premises.

With a total investment of 72.4 million euros—funded by the European Union, the European Investment Bank, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development—the "Energy Efficiency in the Republic of Moldova" project aims to transform medical institutions into safer, more comfortable, and more sustainable spaces for patients and medical staff.
